Empirical Studies on eCommerce-technologies

Project: RFID: Empirical Studies

Project description

The economic potential of RFID applications in areas like logistics, marketing and production control is reflected in many forecasts. Also, a lot of companies publicly announce plans for RFID projects. Judging from these events, however, one can infer the actual scope of RFID application in Germany only to a very limited extend. Technical problems in these pilot projects are also often understated in the companies' public announcements.

Furthermore, public perception is significantly biased: The loss of privacy when used on item level is already discussed, although pilot projects about the application of RFID transponders on item level are not yet existant. So everythin points to the fact that nothing will change until appropriate solutions for the real or suspected loss of privacy are found. It is also uncertain if small and medium-sized companies (KMU) can profit from RFID in the same manner as big companies.

In order to get a fact-based image of RFID usage in Germany, the companies' experiences with RFID technology are collected in empirical studies for the sake of a progress report. The target group consists of RFID pioneers as well as companies from business sectors for which RFID usage is particularly tempting. The overall goal is to provide decision-makers in companies with a solid basis for a first orientation on the topic of RFID.
